Surau and Rumah Gadang as a Complementary Islamic Education System: Historical Contributions to Nusantara Civilization

Abstract

Studies on Minangkabau Islamic education have largely positioned the Surau as a religious educational institution, whereas the rumah gadang tends to be discussed within the contexts of custom (adat), kinship, and culture. In reality, however, the two share a significant relationship in shaping the Minangkabau educational system one that integrates Islamic values, customary norms, social ethics, and local wisdom. This article aims to analyze the contributions of the Surau and the Rumah Gadang as Minangkabau Islamic educational institutions in shaping the civilization of the Nusantara region. This study employs a historical research method with a qualitative approach, combining literature reviews and interviews with a key figure (Datuak/Niniak Mamak) possessing significant knowledge of and involvement in Minangkabau Islamic education. Primary sources include accessible, transliterated religious manuscripts associated with the Surau as well as interview data, while secondary sources comprise relevant books, journal articles, and prior research. The findings indicate that the Surau served as a venue for religious, intellectual, and spiritual education and for the training of religious scholars (ulama), whereas the Rumah Gadang functioned as a space for informal education that instilled customary values, morality, social responsibility, the practice of deliberation (musyawarah), and cultural identity. Both institutions operated complementarily to shape a Minangkabau society that was religious, grounded in custom, knowledgeable, and socially responsible. Thus, the Surau and Rumah Gadang made significant contributions to the civilization of the Malay Archipelago by fostering Islamic scholarly traditions, integrating custom with religion, and disseminating Minangkabau socio-cultural values.
